Script TypesExplained
Over thousands of years, humans developed five ways to record language. Understanding each type transforms how you see every writing system in the world.
Alphabet
Writes both consonants and vowels
Core Concept
A writing system where each symbol represents a single sound — either a consonant or a vowel. Both are represented equally, making it the most complete phonetic recording system.
Originating from the Greek alphabet, this concept is now the most widely used writing type globally. The Latin alphabet alone is used by billions to write hundreds of languages. Hangul is also an alphabet — uniquely arranged into syllabic blocks.
Vowel Treatment
Both consonants and vowels have independent symbols
