Created in 1896 by Sultan Ibrahim Mbouombouo Njoya of the Bamum kingdom in Cameroon. Starting with 510 pictographs, it was revised multiple times to settle on 80 syllabic signs. Sultan Njoya used it to compile history, medicine, and religious texts, preserving an independent knowledge system through the colonial era.
