Egyptian Demotic, developed from Hieratic script around 650 BC. One of three scripts on the Rosetta Stone, it served as a bridge in deciphering hieroglyphs and Greek. A simplified form used for everyday administrative and commercial documents, it is the direct ancestor of Coptic script. "Demotic" means "of the people" in Greek.
