Deseret
Alphabet designed in the 1850s at Brigham Young's direction for English spelling reform.
Alphabet designed in the 1850s at Brigham Young's direction for English spelling reform. Tried as an official script in Utah Territory (Deseret Territory), its 38 signs represent English phonemically, eliminating irregular spelling. "Deseret" derives from a word in the Book of Mormon meaning "honeybee." Used in the Deseret News newspaper from 1854–1869. Today it serves as material for Mormon historical research and linguistics education.
