Abugida created in 1904 by British missionary Samuel Pollard for the Miao people of Yunnan and Guizhou, China. Spread rapidly alongside Bible translation, dramatically reducing Miao illiteracy. Pollard's geometric design is said to have been inspired by traditional Miao embroidery patterns. Suppressed as a religious and ethnic minority script during China's Cultural Revolution (1966–76), it was restored after the Reform and Opening Up period.
