Alphabet created in 1949 by Guinean linguist Solomana Kante for Manding languages. "N'Ko" means "I say" in Mandinka. Written right-to-left, it serves languages spoken by 35 million people across West Africa. Kante stated he created the script to refute the colonial-era prejudice that "Africa has no writing system."
