Alphabet created in 1925 by Indian scholar Pandit Raghunath Murmu for the Santali language. Officially listed in India's Eighth Schedule, symbolizing the identity of ~8 million Santali people. Murmu spent 20 years studying existing writing systems before creating it. The Santali people led the largest indigenous rebellion against British colonialism in 1855 (the Santhal Rebellion), and this script is the modern symbol of that spirit of resistance.
