Alphabet created by Osman Yusuf Kenadid in the 1920s for the Somali language, which had no standard script until the Latin alphabet was officially adopted in 1972. Designed to perfectly represent Somali's unique phonemes. Since the Somali Civil War (1991–), it has been rediscovered as a symbol of Somali national identity in the nation-rebuilding process, and is taught in diaspora communities as part of cultural preservation efforts.
