One of the world's first writing systems, used in southwestern Iran (3200–2900 BC) almost simultaneously with and independently of Sumerian. Composed of ~1,000 signs, it is only partially deciphered. Administrative documents recording agriculture, livestock, and trade are the primary surviving texts. Thousands of clay tablets from the excavation site of Susa (Iran) have been discovered, providing key insight into the early economic systems of the Elamite civilization.
