Unicode Standard

International character encoding standard published in 1991. Unicode 15.1 (2023) registers 149,813 characters, covering all living scripts and many historical ones. Before Unicode, each country and company used different encodings, causing widespread character corruption ("mojibake"). Without Unicode, today's global internet, email, and software ecosystem would be impossible. Emoji are also part of Unicode — over 3,600 are currently registered.
