The historical Uyghur script evolved from Sogdian to become the ancestor of Mongolian and Manchu scripts (8th–15th century). Today's Xinjiang Uyghurs officially use the modern Perso-Arabic Uyghur script. As China suppresses Uyghur culture, teaching this script is being restricted — for the overseas Uyghur diaspora, it has become a symbol of resistance against oppression. Uyghur communities in Kazakhstan and other Central Asian nations are pursuing a switch to Latin script.
