Script created in 1844 by Albanian scholar Naum Veqilharxhi for the Albanian language, which was then written in a mixture of Arabic, Greek, and Latin scripts. Veqilharxhi created it to revive Albanian national culture under Ottoman rule, but it was ultimately displaced by the Latin alphabet. One of several competing scripts, it illustrates the long historical journey toward unified Albanian orthography.
