405년 메스로프 마슈토츠가 아르메니아어를 위해 창안한 38자 알파벳. 창제 즉시 성경 번역에 사용됐으며, 아르메니아인들은 이 문자를 "신의 선물"로 여긴다. 아르메니아 교회는 이 문자 덕분에 비잔틴·페르시아·아랍의 정치적 지배 속에서도 독자 문화와 신앙을 유지했다. 현재 전 세계 아르메니아 디아스포라(약 700만 명)의 정체성 상징이다.
