線文字A
紀元前1800〜1450年、クレタのミノア文明の文字。線文字Bが解読されたにもかかわらず、線文字Aはいまも読めない。基層の言語であるミノア語が既知のどの語族にも当てはまらず、線文字Bの音価を当ててみても意味が取れないからである。「A-SA-SA-RA-ME」というくり返しの句は女神の名と推測されるが、確かめようがない。大規模な新発掘か、対訳碑文の発見だけが突破口になりうる。

There has been no breakthrough. Over 120 years of attempts, none accepted by the scholarly community. Minoan is likely an isolated language or one that left no known descendants.

Linear A remains one of the greatest linguistic mysteries of our time. We still do not know what language the Minoan civilization spoke. Only a major new excavation or a bilingual inscription could provide the answer.
