Theories of its origin divide between Armenian missionary Mesrop Mashtots in the 5th century and an independent Georgian origin. Three Georgian scripts coexist (Asomtavruli, Nuskhuri, Mkhedruli); the current official Mkhedruli is inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Georgia holds the world's oldest winemaking tradition (6000 BC), and thousands of years of wine-related literature survive in this script.
