Alphabet created by Visigothic bishop Ulfilas in the 4th century based on the Greek alphabet for Bible translation.
Alphabet created by Visigothic bishop Ulfilas in the 4th century based on the Greek alphabet for Bible translation. The Codex Argenteus — the Ulfilas Bible beautifully copied in silver ink on purple parchment in the 6th century — is the oldest literary record in any Germanic language, now preserved at Uppsala University in Sweden. Gothic preserves early forms of the Germanic language family, making it a key source for studying the common ancestor of English, German, and the Nordic languages.
