Ancient script of the Berber (Amazigh) peoples of North Africa. Derived from the Libyan script (3rd century BC), tens of thousands of rock inscriptions survive in the Sahara. The 2011 Moroccan constitution officially recognized Amazigh language and adopted Tifinagh as its official script. The Tuareg people have maintained this script for millennia, with women historically serving as its primary custodians. Today the Unicode-standardized IRCAM Tifinagh is used digitally.
