북인도에서 18~20세기 초까지 법률·행정·상업 문서에 폭넓게 사용된 실용 문자. 무굴 제국 시대 법원 기록과 토지 문서가 이 문자로 작성됐다. 영국 식민지 시대에 데바나가리와 경쟁했으나 결국 표준화 과정에서 밀려났다.
