Created by Jurchen Wanyan Xiyin in 1119 based on Khitan script. Official script of the Jin dynasty (1115–1234). Its descendant, the Manchu script, became the official script of the Qing dynasty; secret Qing imperial documents in Manchu remain historical sources not yet fully translated. Decoded only in the 20th century by Russian and Chinese scholars — a rare example of independent script invention within the Chinese cultural sphere alongside Khitan and Tangut.
