Sanskrit script developed in India in the 6th century, transmitted to China, Japan, and Korea with Buddhism. Still actively used in Japanese Buddhist calligraphy. Korea's "Beonja" (梵字) is this same script. Used in Shingon and Tendai rituals to write sacred mantras (dharani), it is also carved on tombstones in Japan today.
