Bugis sailors of the 17th–18th centuries were the finest navigators in Southeast Asia. Their voyages to Malaysia, the Philippines, and northern Australia were recorded in this Lontara script. Some etymologists suggest the English word "bugbear" derives from the terror Bugis pirates inspired in European sailors.
