Extended version of Ge'ez (Ethiopic) script, the official script of Ethiopia. Additional signs were added to cover diverse minority languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea (Tigrinya, Gurage, Sidama, Afar, etc.). Ethiopia is a multilingual nation with 80+ languages, and this extended system plays a key role in representing that linguistic diversity. The 1991 Ethiopian federal constitution guaranteeing language rights for all ethnic groups greatly increased the need for extended characters.
