Bengali (Bangla)

Used by ~230 million people, Bengali is the world's 7th most spoken language. Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore wrote his poetry in this script. Bangladesh's independence (1971) grew from the movement to protect Bengali against Pakistan's imposition of Urdu. February 21st — "International Mother Language Day" — was established to honor students killed defending Bengali in Dhaka in 1952.
