Traditional script of the Sundanese people (~42 million) of western Java. Officially designated as a regional script by the Indonesian government in 2009. A Brahmic Pallava-derived script used since the 10th century. Now included alongside Javanese and Latin scripts in school curricula. Manuscripts recording Sundanese music (Gamelan), dance, and puppet theater are preserved in this script — the core of West Javanese cultural identity.
