Sanskrit script used in Tamil Nadu, South India from the 6th century. "Grantha" means "book/manuscript" in Sanskrit. Used alongside Tamil script, it is the direct ancestor of the Malayalam script. Hindu scriptures, Buddhist texts, and astronomical treatises are preserved in this script. Currently used by Sanskrit scholars in Tamil Nadu and Kerala for traditional rituals and academic purposes. Added to Unicode in 2012.
