Traditional script of Java, Indonesia. A Brahmic Pallava-derived script evolved from 8th–14th century Kawi. Replaced by Latin in everyday use, it is maintained in schools and traditional arts. In Indonesia — home to the world's largest Muslim population — this script is a living artifact of the Hindu-Buddhist era. It is the recording medium for Javanese traditional arts including Wayang puppet theater and Gamelan music.
