Traditional script of the Meitei people of Manipur, India. Forcibly abolished by a Hindu king in the 18th century, it was restored through a 20th-century ethnic revival movement. In 2021, the Indian Parliament included Meitei in the Eighth Schedule, officially recognizing its education. Traditional records of Meitei martial arts (considered a forerunner of Muay Thai), music, and dance are transmitted in this script. In conflict-ridden Manipur, the script's revival has become a symbol of cultural resistance.
